Plan your journey to Espoo and discover the easiest ways to explore the city, Helsinki and the beautiful surrounding countryside.
Espoo is located immediately west of Helsinki and forms part of the Finnish capital region.
The city is easy to reach from Helsinki Airport and has excellent public transportation connections, making it a convenient destination for visitors travelling without a car.
Whether you are planning a city break or want to explore the surrounding natural attractions, there are several practical ways to get around.
Flying to Espoo
Helsinki Airport is the main international gateway to the region.
Located in neighbouring Vantaa, the airport offers flight connections to destinations throughout Europe and beyond.
From the airport, you can reach Espoo using public transportation, taxis or a rental car.
Depending on your destination, you may need to combine a train journey with a metro or bus connection.
Travelling to central Espoo generally takes approximately 40–60 minutes by public transportation, depending on your destination and connections.
Travelling by Train
Espoo has several railway stations with connections to central Helsinki and other destinations in the capital region.
Leppävaara and Espoo railway station are important transport hubs.
If you are travelling from other Finnish cities, you can often connect to local services through Helsinki or other stations along the railway network.
Getting Around Espoo
Espoo is part of the Helsinki Regional Transport Authority network, known as HSL.
The metro connects districts such as Tapiola, Otaniemi, Matinkylä and Kivenlahti with Helsinki.
Local trains and buses provide additional connections throughout the city.
You can use the HSL journey planner to find routes, timetables and suitable tickets.
Exploring Espoo’s Natural Attractions
If you want to visit Nuuksio National Park, public buses provide access to areas near some of the park’s main entrances.
However, travelling times can be longer than expected, particularly when visiting more remote natural attractions.
A rental car can be useful if you want to explore several destinations outside the urban area.
Do You Need a Car?
If you are mainly visiting Tapiola, Otaniemi, the coastline and central Helsinki, you probably will not need a rental car.
Public transportation is generally the most convenient option for exploring the urban areas.
For a first visit, I recommend spending at least two or three days in Espoo and the surrounding Helsinki region.
This gives you enough time to enjoy the museums, discover the coastline and spend a day exploring beautiful Finnish nature.
